IRM outreach with civil society in Nepal

The Independent Redress Mechanism (IRM) continues its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and community engagement in climate finance projects. On 29 February 2024, the IRM, in collaboration with the Center for Indigenous Peoples' Research and Development (CIPRED), conducted an impactful virtual outreach event in Nepal. The webinar aimed to educate and empower CSOs and communities on the role of the IRM in addressing grievances related to GCF climate projects.

The event began with an introduction from Dr. Pasang Dolma Sherpa, the Executive Director of CIPRED. Dr. Sherpa provided an overview CIPRED’s work advocating for Indigenous Peoples’ issues in Nepal. She emphasised the role that traditional practices and knowledge play in climate resilience, highlighting the importance of inclusive Indigenous Peoples policies.

From the IRM, Peter Carlson, Sue Kyung Hwang, and Preksha Kumar provided an overview of the GCF and the core mandate of the IRM. Participants asked a number of insightful questions throughout the session on accessibility, GCF projects, and the IRM complaint process.

Our quarterly outreach events are beneficial for both the IRM and local communities. They provide the opportunity for a constructive dialogue with groups on the ground to discuss their concerns, learn about the IRM, and explore how we can ensure the best outcomes for GCF projects.
